Illinois man killed while fleeing police in Michigan City | 963XKE | Classic Fort Wayne Rock

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (ADAMS) – Indiana State Police say an 18-year-old Illinois man died after crashing into a concrete pillar at a Michigan City football stadium following of a police pursuit.

Michigan City Police say it began around 7:30 p.m. Thursday night when a minor reported a domestic situation to a Michigan City Police Department officer. Officers have opened an investigation into the household battery allegation.

An 18-year-old suspect in the investigation met with officers in the lobby of the Michigan City Police Department to return the property to the minor. Officers say he ran when they started asking him questions. According to the police, he got into a vehicle and took off. Officers followed the suspect, now identified as Grant Gables, at low speed initially. Officers said he then began to walk away before finally crashing into the concrete barrier at Ames Field.

Grable had to be extracted from the vehicle. Police say life-saving measures were taken, but he was pronounced dead at the scene by the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office.

Indiana State Police released the following:

On Thursday, September 22, at approximately 8:10 p.m., the Michigan City Police Department called Indiana State Police to investigate a fatal accident in their city.

Preliminary investigation by Trp. Pratt shows that at approximately 8:00 p.m., Michigan City Police officers observed an eastbound vehicle in the westbound lanes of Michigan Blvd. Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop; however, the driver refused to stop, resulting in a chase. The driver continued to flee at relatively low speeds through city streets until the vehicle was driving south on Washington St. from Barker Ave. While driving south on Washington St., the driver accelerated to a high speed and failed to stop at the intersection. from Skwiat Legion Ave. The vehicle then struck the concrete pillars that form a barrier at Ames Field. After hitting the pillars, the vehicle flew into the brick wall of the bleachers and through this wall to come to rest under the bleachers. The driver had to be extricated from the vehicle. Rescue measures were carried out on the driver; however, he was pronounced dead at the scene by the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office. The deceased has been identified as Grant J. Grable, 18, of Bourbonnais, IL. Next of kin notification was made by the LaPorte County coroner.

Indiana State Police are investigating the crash and reconstructing the scene at the request of the Michigan City Police Department. Any other questions regarding what led to the lawsuit should be directed to the Michigan City Police Department.
