Michigan County Coronavirus Data Thursday Feb.4: State-wide positivity rate drops to 3.8%


For the first time in nearly four months, Michigan’s positivity rate fell below 4% on diagnostic testing for coronaviruses.

Of the tests included in Wednesday’s report, 1,542 – or 3.8% – out of 39,755 came back positive for the virus. The last time the daily positivity rate fell below 4% was on October 15.

Michigan’s seven-day average positivity rate is now 4.6% from 6.3% a week ago. Meanwhile, the seven-day average of daily new cases is now 1,379 new cases per day, up from an average of 1,727 last Wednesday.

How Michigan Stacks Up With Other States on COVID-19 Cases, Deaths, Hospitalizations, Testing, Vaccinations

Below is a more in-depth look at the county-level data, based on metrics used by the Michigan Department of Heath and Human Services to assess coronavirus risk levels. The scale used by the MDHHS has six levels: “low” plus the AE levels.

First, a look at the seven-day average positivity rates by county, grouped by state metric.

  • Level E (more than 20%): none
  • Level D (15-20%): none.
  • Level C (10-15%): five counties, from highest to lowest: Gogebic, Missaukee, Ontonagon, Crawford and Wexford.
  • Level B (7-10%): 15 counties, highest to lowest: Cass, Benzie, Presque Isle, Huron, Van Buren, St Joseph, Newaygo, Lenawee, Monroe, Kalkaska, Hillsdale, Berrien, Clare, Branch and Eaton.
  • Level A (3-7%): 46 counties, highest to lowest – Alcona, Ingham, Livingston, Osceola, Tuscola, Allegan, Shiawassee, Calhoun, Leelanau, Oscoda, Saginaw, Mason, Roscommon, Kalamazoo, Mecosta, St Clair, Lapeer, Midland, Jackson, Muskegon, Macomb, Antrim, Ottawa, Wayne, Kent, Bay, Oceana, Oakland, Sanilac, Grand Traverse, Arenac, Clinton, Barry, Manistee, Ionia, Iosco, Gladwin, Emmet, Otsego, Montcalm, Genesee and Washtenaw.
  • Low (less than 3%): 21 counties, highest to lowest – Ogemaw, Luce, Gratiot, Isabella, Montmorency, Charlevoix, Alpena, Houghton, Dickinson, Keweenaw, Chippewa, Cheboygan, Menominee, Lake, Mackinac, Delta , Iron, Marquette, Schoolcraft, Algiers and Baraga.

New cases per capita

Another metric used by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to access coronavirus risk is daily new cases per capita.

This measure calculates the average number of new cases per 1 million inhabitants.

Levels for each county:

  • Level E (over 150 cases per million): 31 counties, highest to lowest – Ontonagon, Gogebic, Lenawee, St. Joseph, Washtenaw, Wexford, Cass, Clare, Ionia, Berrien, Crawford, Missaukee, Huron, Ingham , Van Buren, Eaton, Midland, Mason, Alcona, Jackson, Monroe, Calhoun, Livingston, Ottawa, Saginaw, Barry, Branch, Newaygo, Presque Isle, Grand Traverse and Kent.
  • Level D (70 to 149 cases per million): 36 counties – Bay, Allegan, Benzie, Iron, Sanilac, Oscoda, Shiawassee, Keweenaw, Antrim, Gladwin, Mecosta, Clinton, Kalkaska, Hillsdale, Lapeer, Manistee, Tuscola, Kalamazoo , Emmet, Oakland, Macomb, Osceola, Ogemaw, Houghton, Arenac, Baraga, Wayne, Muskegon, Gratiot, St. Clair, Isabella, Montcalm, Oceana, Genesee, Roscommon and Charlevoix.
  • Level C (40 to 69 cases per million): 10 counties – Menominee, Chippewa, Iosco, Leelanau, Otsego, Algiers, Cheboygan, Marquette, Alpena and Dickinson.
  • Level B (20 to 40 cases per million): Four counties – Mackinac, Lake, Schoolcraft and Delta.
  • Level A (7 to 20 cases per million): Montmorency.
  • Low (less than 7 cases per million): Luce.

MDHHS overall score by region

The MDHHS assigned an overall score to each of the state’s MI Start regions, looking at factors such as new cases and deaths per capita, test positivity rates, number of tests administered, and service visits. emergency for symptoms of COVID-19.

As of Nov. 4, Michigan’s eight MI Start regions are at the highest level the state uses to assess coronavirus risk.

Cases daily it was reported to the State

The first is a graph showing new cases reported to the state each day for the past 30 days. This is based on when a confirmed coronavirus test is reported to the state, which means the patient first became ill a few days ago.

(In a few cases, a county reported a negative (decrease) number of new daily cases, as a result of retroactive reclassification by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. In these cases, we subtracted the cases from the date previous and put 0 in the date of the report.)

The following graph below shows new cases over the past 30 days based on symptom onset. In this graph, numbers for the most recent days are incomplete due to the time lag between people getting sick and getting a confirmed coronavirus test result, which can take up to a week or more.
