Monday, February 15, coronavirus data by Michigan county: 60 of 83 counties see number of cases drop


Sixty of Michigan’s 83 counties saw a drop in new coronavirus cases last week from the previous week, and 57 counties saw a drop in positivity rates.

The statewide seven-day average positivity rate is now 3.7% down from 4.2% a week ago. Meanwhile, the seven-day average of daily new cases is now 939 new cases per day, down 27% from an average of 1,287 a week ago.

Below is a more in-depth look at the county-level data, based on metrics used by the Michigan Department of Heath and Human Services to assess coronavirus risk levels. The scale used by the MDHHS has six levels: “low” plus the AE levels.

First, a look at the seven-day average positivity rates by county, grouped by state metric.

  • Level E (more than 20%): none
  • Level D (15-20%): none.
  • Level C (10-15%): Gogebic, Luce and Hillsdale.
  • Level B (7-10%): four counties, from highest to lowest: Ionia, Ontonagon, Missaukee and Wexford.
  • Level A (3-7%): 46 counties, highest to lowest – Isabella, Mecosta, Roscommon, Shiawassee, Tuscola, Presque Isle, Huron, Lenawee, Kalkaska, Ingham, Van Buren, Cass, Calhoun, Saginaw, Berrien, Eaton, Lapeer, Monroe, Livingston, Osceola, Newaygo, Grand Traverse, Muskegon, Kent, Alcona, Branche, Benzie, Wayne, Ottawa, Macomb, Clinton, Allegan, Oceana, Kalamazoo, Bay, Jackson, Clare, Gladwin, St Clair, Midland, Arenac, Barry, Oakland, Alger, Oscoda and Genesee.
  • Low (less than 3%): 30 counties, highest to lowest – Sanilac, Montcalm, Houghton, Ogemaw, Emmet, Crawford, Montmorency, Iosco, St Joseph, Washtenaw, Dickinson, Leelanau, Alpena, Schoolcraft, Cheboygan, Otsego, Menominee, Delta, Manistee, Antrim, Baraga, Charlevoix, Mason, Marquette, Lake, Gratiot, Iron, Chippewa, Mackinac and Keweenaw.

New cases per capita

Another metric used by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to access coronavirus risk is daily new cases per capita.

This measure calculates the average number of new cases per 1 million inhabitants.

Levels for each county:

  • Level E (over 150 cases per million): nine counties, highest to lowest: Keweenaw, Gogebic, Ontonagon, Washtenaw, Missaukee, Wexford, Hillsdale, Mecosta and Lenawee.
  • Level D (70 to 149 cases per million): 46 counties – Sanilac, Ingham, Baraga, Ionia, Shiawassee, Calhoun, Kent, Houghton, Berrien, Ottawa, Saginaw, Huron, Van Buren, Clinton, Newaygo, Lapeer, Livingston, Grand Traverse, Cass, Tuscola, Eaton, Alcona, Bay, Midland, Isabella, Allegan, Oceana, Emmet, Monroe, Branch, Roscommon, Clare, Benzie, Wayne, Presque Isle, Osceola, Montcalm, St. Joseph, Arenac, Barry, Macomb, Muskegon, Antrim, Kalamazoo, Oakland and Kalkaska.
  • Level C (40-69 cases per million): 12 counties – Jackson, Oscoda, Cheboygan, Gladwin, Iron, Crawford, Genesee, St. Clair, Manistee, Menominee, Ogemaw and Alpena.
  • Level B (20 to 40 cases per million) 11 counties: Delta, Mason, Lake, Marquette, Gratiot, Montmorency, Otsego, Iosco, Dickinson, Charlevoix and Luce.
  • Level A (7 to 20 cases per million): Algiers, Mackinac and Leelanau.
  • Low (less than 7 cases per million): Chippewa and Schoolcraft.

MDHHS overall score by region

The MDHHS assigned an overall score to each of the state’s MI Start regions, looking at factors such as new cases and deaths per capita, test positivity rates, number of tests administered, and service visits. emergency for symptoms of COVID-19.

As of Nov. 4, Michigan’s eight MI Start regions are at the highest level the state uses to assess coronavirus risk.

Cases daily it was reported to the State

The first is a graph showing new cases reported to the state each day for the past 30 days. This is based on when a confirmed coronavirus test is reported to the state, which means the patient first became ill a few days ago.

(In a few cases, a county reported a negative (decrease) number of new daily cases, as a result of retroactive reclassification by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. In these cases, we subtracted the cases from the date previous and put 0 in the report date.)

The following graph below shows new cases over the past 30 days based on symptom onset. In this graph, numbers for the most recent days are incomplete due to the time lag between people getting sick and getting a confirmed coronavirus test result, which can take up to a week or more.

On Monday, February 15, the state reported 852 new cases of coronavirus and 88 new deaths.
