From household names at the top of the range – Gonzaga, Kansas, Baylor – to well-worn debates everywhere – why was Coach K shipped out West? did anyone do Dayton wrong? – this version of Selection Sunday was as comfortable as a well-worn Air Jordan.

March Madness is back to normal, or as close to normal as it gets, and that means all of these amazing upsets and one-off winners will be playing out in front of mad crowds for the first time in three years.

“It was a really special year because we all realized what we had missed,” said Villanova coach Jay Wright, whose second-seeded team won the Big East title in front of a packed house at Madison Square Garden.

Gonzaga is the top seed overall, with Arizona, Kansas and Baylor joining them on the “1” line for it “It feels like the good old days” NCAA Tournament. It’s the first since 2019 to be played in different cities and time zones across America. The party lands in New Orleans for the Final Four and the championship game from April 2-4.

It’s a return to the way things were before the pandemic removed the tournament from the 2020 schedule entirely, then turned the 2021 event into a one-city affair – all matches were played in a bubble of fortune in front of limited crowds in and around Indianapolis.

“It’s about staying in the moment and having fun more than anyone in the tournament,” said second-seeded Kentucky coach John Calipari.

The best way to have fun, of course, is to win it all. Baylor did it last year in a title match against Gonzaga. Just like last year, the two are the No. 1 seeds again.

Arizona was next at 6-1, followed by Kentucky (15-2) and Baylor (11-1).

“A great learning experience,” Gonzaga’s Drew Timme called out last year’s runner-up in an interview on ESPN. “Obviously things didn’t go the way we wanted. But it allowed a lot of self-growth for the program.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final tournament before his retirement saw Duke play as the No. 2 seed in the West. His road to a 13th Final Four could include a second-round match against Tom Izzo and No. 10 Michigan State. And while some thought the selection committee might send Coach K to his native Chicago and the Midwest for the Sweet 16 as a parting gift, somehow it would be more like a trip to San Francisco and a potential meeting with Mark Few’s Bulldogs.

The teams that just slipped into the No. 12 seeds Wyoming and Indiana, who will face off in the top four. No. 11 seeds Rutgers and Notre Dame were the other bottom two teams, while Michigan was also seeded 11th.

The Fighting Irish, Hoosiers and Wolverines are among the top nine national teams to come out of the Big Ten.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – After a thrilling victory in West Virginia to end its road trip, Michigan State’s women’s tennis team returns home this weekend for a pair of big matchups at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.

Coming in at No. 55 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, the Spartans open a three-game homestand on Saturday, March 12 when they host 38th-ranked Columbia in MSU’s final non-conference game of the spring at 11 a.m. The Green and White will then begin Big Ten Conference play on Sunday, March 13 when Indiana comes to town for another showdown at 11 a.m.

MSU dropped doubles point to WVU despite senior Maja Pietrowicz and graduate student Mary Lewis earning a 6-4 win on the No. 2 court. Lewis then won their singles match in first place 6-1, 6-3, but the Mountaineers picked up victories on the fourth and sixth courts to put MSU on the brink of defeat. Pietrowicz went on to claim a three-set victory on the No. 3 court, while his senior colleagues Nicole Stephens and Lauren Lemonds helped secure the Spartans’ return after delayed starts. Stephens had her first set on the No. 2 court up 16 points in a tie-break, but she took that and the second set to level the team’s score at 3-3, while Lemonds won a three-set victory over the fifth court to close out MSU’s victory.

First-year student Charlotte Gisclo and second Ayshe can MSU pace with 10 singles wins each, while the senior trio of Lemonds, Pietrowicz and Stephens all have nine singles wins this season. Stephens has been particularly strong this spring, going 6-1 in doubles, while Can has seven singles wins in doubles.

On the doubles side, Lewis and Pietrowicz’s victory in West Virginia moved them to 10-9 as a duo this season, while Stephens and Can went together to 8-5 and 7-3 since the start of games. two fold.

Columbia was out last week after playing four games in five days Feb. 23-27, as the Lions beat regional foes St. John’s, 4-2, and NJIT, 4-0, on the same day before losing a 4-1 game over No. 45 Iowa State but bounced back with a 4-2 win over No. 65 Washington State to close the streak two days later. Sitting at 9-3 this season and ranked No. 38 in the ITA Tag Team Rankings, Columbia has Akanksha Bhan ranked among the nation’s top singles players at No. 121 with a solo record of 9-11.

Indiana enters the weekend with a 7-5 record and will face No. 32 Michigan on Saturday before heading to East Lansing. After a loss to Utah to open the spring, the Hoosiers posted a five-game winning streak but have gone 2-4 since then. Lara Schneider paces IU with a 15-3 singles record, and she’s also leading the way in the doubles court with partner Laura Masic, as the Hoosier duo are 11-4 this season.

Saturday will be the first ever dual-competition meeting between MSU and Columbia.

Sunday’s B1G showdown will be the 58th all-time series meeting between the Hoosiers and Spartans. IU hold a 48-8-1 all-time advantage after splitting two games last season as both teams picked up a win on their home turf.

We are fortunate to live in a state that is considered a “Water and winter wonderland“Michigan is scenic any time of the year! However, we Michiganians know that the warm weather is all too brief, so when summer finally arrives, we’re ready to take full advantage of it.

If you’re planning on camping at any of Michigan’s state parks this season, you need to make your reservation yesterday. Although it’s only the beginning of March, many of the most popular weekends of the year are already full according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Although many state parks allow you to make your reservation up to 6 months in advance, when the state camping website first opened reservations November 1, 2021 for the upcoming season summer 2022, many dates have been entered although the DNR says you may still be able to find open dates.

For my part, I am very disappointed with this news. Being recently back in state camping was high on my Michigan summer list. I was so excited to visit all the places I didn’t get to visit the first time, like Petoskey, Porcupine Mountains, and Tahquamenon Falls. Are my summer plans in jeopardy?

There are several possible explanations for the sudden increased interest in Michigan state park campgrounds. The most obvious cause being the Covid-19 pandemic. During peak times of the pandemic, camping and exploring the outdoors was one of the few activities we could still do and many Michiganders used quarantine to pick up camping and hiking as a new hobby. .

It’s exciting that so many residents want to explore all that Pure Michigan has to offer because there’s so much! However, it is frustrating that some of us have to go without or adjust our plans for the season. A Reddit user said, “I’ve argued before that Michigan residents should be one hour ahead of people in the state.” While others said, “It’s time to create more state parks!”

the Michigan MNR encourages those wishing to camp this summer to check back frequently as plans change and there may be cancellations. Some have said that the longer a reservation is made, the more likely it is to go unused. I have a feeling that if gas prices continue to rise the way they are now, many Michigan residents won’t be able to afford long road trips across the state.

Have your summer plans been foiled due to a lack of available camping dates?

Last week, baseball played its first series against a major conference opponent in Michigan State and its first road game of the year against the University of the Incarnate Word.

Over the weekend, the Wildcats managed to sweep MSU three games to nil. However, the Wildcats dropped their road opener to the Incarnate Word Cardinals 12-5.

Earlier that week, the team had planned to play Michigan State on Friday, a doubleheader on Saturday and the final game on Sunday. However, the bad weather turned into a doubleheader on Sunday and a midday match on Monday with a day off before playing Incarnate Word on Wednesday.

In Game 1 on Sunday, the Wildcats moved up to a 2-0 lead thanks to a 382-foot homer from Colton Eager to right field. Eager wasn’t done with a three-point home run from 432 feet late in the eighth to make it 8-1.

The Wildcats would win Game 1 10-1 while using three pitchers who threw 13 strikeouts. Most notable was a three-inning no-hitter effort by Connor Carlton, a junior pitcher from Abilene.

Game 2 started off similarly, with the Wildcats getting six runs in the first inning and six combined runs in the third and fourth innings. This game was highlighted by an outstanding pitch from Breck Eichelberger, a junior pitcher from Ivins, Utah.

Eichelberger, a transfer from Salt Lake City Community College, had been roughed up in his first start of the season against North Dakota State. On Saturday, Eichelberger pitched six one-run innings en route to a 12-4 Wildcats victory in that game.

In Game 3 of the series, the Wildcats found themselves down 2-1 heading into Game 7, where an offensive rally pushed nine points for a 10-2 comeback win and series sweep of the Spartans.

In a series with excellent baseball on both offense and defense, head coach Rick McCarty was happy to see his team playing at a high level at the start of the season.

“The throw was way better,” McCarty said. “More consistent from the first weekend, so we liked what we saw there in that regard just from the management of the strike zone and very few steps. Offensively, we certainly got the job done there and gave our guys a cushion.

With just one day between games, the Wildcats traveled to San Antonio for their first road game to face future Western Athletic Conference opponent Incarnate Word.

The Wildcats opened the scoring early with a run in the first, but UIW responded late in the first with four runs and eight runs in the bottom of the fifth. Although the Wildcats managed to drive in three more points, the deficit was too big to close, dropping the game 12-5.

In that game, pitching proved the Wildcats downfall using nine pitchers – however, North Richland Hills senior outfielder Colton Eager went 4-for-4 at home plate, including two doubles.

Despite the scoreline, McCarty is still aware of the growing pains a team will have at the start of the season.

“This round got away from us like I said, we’re still trying to figure out some things,” McCarty said. “I probably should have done some things differently myself. Seeing Eager and Mitchell Dickson, not that they were slow to get going, but it was really good to see those guys produce and have good games.

The Wildcats continue their season with a three-game series against Marist on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. With notable matchups coming up against Baylor on Wednesday and their WAC season opener against UT-Rio Grande Valley from March 11-13.

Game Notes: With 10 games remaining on the Big Ten schedule for Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, it’s probably a bit too early to count on Big Ten tournament seeding scenarios, but… if the Spartans can get a little help from Michigan ( by beating Iowa on Thursday), Illinois (by beating Iowa on Sunday) and, uh, Penn State (by beating Rutgers on Sunday), there’s a path to a double bye for the Spartans in Indianapolis next week. (OK, not exactly a bet we’d want to put money on, but still….)

Former Michigan State wide receiver Felton Davis III gets another opportunity in pro football. Davis has been signed by the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League, the team announced Tuesday.

After finishing his senior season at MSU in 2018, Davis was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL as an undrafted free agent, and he remained with the team through the 2019 season while treating a wound. In the CFL, he will join fellow Spartans BJ Cunningham, a new member of the Ottawa Redblacks after spending six seasons with the Montreal Alouettes; Arjen Colquhoun, who is with the Toronto Argonauts; and Jeremy Langford, who plays for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Calgary also announced the signing of wide receiver Brendan Langley in conjunction with the addition of Davis. The Stampeders went 8-6 in 2021, losing to the Roughriders in the Western Semifinals.

A native of Richmond, Va., Davis became one of MSU’s top offensive weapons in his final two seasons at East Lansing. His two catches as a true freshman in 2015 were notable — a 22-yard catch against Iowa in the Big Ten Championship Game and a 28-yard catch against Alabama in the College Football Playoff. Davis followed that up with 12 catches for 150 yards in 12 sophomore appearances before leading the Spartans in receptions (55) receiving yards (776) and receiving touchdowns (nine) in 2017. His senior year was cut short by injury, but he still earned an All-Big Ten honorable mention for throwing in 31 passes for 474 yards and four touchdowns.

A Michigan State staple will move to Green Street this spring.

Conrad’s Grill, which specializes in late-night wraps filled with tater tots, will open in a freestanding building in Third and Green later this year, according to the commercial realtor Guth & Associates, which brokered the deal.

Its menu has dozens of combinations, including wraps with chicken fillets, grilled chicken, steak, and vegetarian options. Customers can order standard designs or create their own. Some of the restaurant’s signature dishes are the breakfast wraps, which feature a mix of options including sausage, bacon, eggs, and cheese.

“Fried potatoes in a tortilla shell might not sound special, but legions of Spartan alums swear by the combo,” wrote Chicago’s online Eater magazine, which in preview the opening of the restaurant there in 2018. (He also reported on the closure of the Chicago Wicker Park neighborhood in December 2021.)

Photo via Conrad’s Grill on Facebook.

It’s not often that we report new restaurants arriving in Campustown. Many of them are fairly inaccessible to the general public, or they are a carbon copy of something else that already exists in Campustown.

But Conrad’s Grill is different. For one, it was born in a college town — the chain now operates two locations in East Lansing, where it was founded by a former Michigan State student in 2007.

The University of Illinois wasn’t the first option for the Big Ten campus expansion — there’s already a location on University of Wisconsin’s Main Street (State Street in Madison), which opened before the pandemic in the winter of 2020. The company is doubling its university locations for its expansion plans.

Second, it is located in a building that has its own parking lot, just off Green Street. It’s something of a rarity, and it’s a bit more likely that those who don’t live or work in the neighborhood might visit.

The location has been a lot of things in the past, mostly fast casual restaurants. More recently it was a Wingin Out. It also housed Niro’s Gyros and a hot dog joint if memory serves.
