There’s always something fun to do in LaPorte County, and the team at Visit Michigan City LaPorte opens its doors to everyone, welcoming locals and visitors to all upcoming events. Founded in 2009 under the brand name of the LaPorte County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the organization strives to enhance economic growth through area attractions and activities.

Michigan City and LaPorte are northern Indiana’s top destinations, with everything visitors need for the perfect couples or family weekend that’s both convenient and affordable, according to Linda Simmons, a member of the team, Director of Marketing at Visit Michigan City LaPorte.

“We have something for everyone all year round,” Simmons said. “Our Lake Michigan and Indiana Dunes National Park offers four seasons of fun activities for everyone. Visitors can also enjoy the delights of small rural towns, marinas, agricultural heritage attractions, arts events, historical museums, and sporting competitions when they are also in the area.

Shops range from the Lighthouse Place Premium Outlet Mall to the quaint downtown neighborhoods of LaPorte and Michigan City, with specialty shops, boutiques, and antique stores. There are plenty of art galleries to browse and find treasures.

Some of the many attractions include the Blue Chip Casino Hotel & Spa, Washington Park Zoo, Friendship Botanical Gardens, Lubeznik Center for the Arts, LaPorte County Historical Society, and Old Lighthouse Museums. Plenty of orchards, breweries, and wineries wait to be discovered year-round, and seasonal farmers’ markets are also an option for those visiting between May and October as well. The historic Barker Mansion is delighted to reopen in December for tours and the unveiling of the new permanent exhibit, the Haskell and Barker Car Company and the Legacy of Freight. These exhibits will take you through Michigan City from the 1830s to the 1900s. The exhibit is a tribute to the Haskell and Barker factory and workers through state-of-the-art visual displays. Shady Creek Winery is another popular destination located in Michigan City. Situated on over 20 acres of land, the winery recently expanded its footprint to include a redesigned lounge area, wine boutique, upstairs outdoor terrace, events center and a brand new wine production facility. . The winery continued to expand its offering which now includes over 30 wines, frozen wine slushes, a full menu and dry cider. Hoop fans can turn to Visit Michigan City LaPorte for details on the upcoming U.S. Marines National Interscholastic Basketball Conference (NIBC) invitational Jan. 5-7, 2023 at LaPorte. The NIBC is a national high school league basketball tournament taking place at the LaPorte Civic Auditorium.

To make access to all of these events and activities easier and more accessible, the Express Air Coach Shuttle is now the hub for passenger pickup and drop-off at O’Hare and Midway Airports from the Marquette Mall Visitor Center .

Express Air Coach is now beginning pickups at the Visitor Center with shuttle service to Midway and O’Hare airports. The transportation service also picks up visitors to the Northwest Indiana area from Chicago airports and transports them to the Marquette Mall Visitor Information Center as a final stop.

“People have to go online to book their tickets and prepay,” Simmons said. “So far it’s been very successful. I think once the holidays come it will be even more popular. Pickups are scheduled three times a day. We have a good partnership with Express Air Coach and people love it. I think it’s just going to get bigger and better as more and more people find out.
