Which Michigan city was just named America’s most haunted?

Do you believe in haunted houses? Well, a number of people are doing it and a site called porch.com has reported on which states have the most haunted sites. They used data obtained from an index called the Haunted places of Shadowlands. The website has indexed a very comprehensive catalog of haunted sites in the United States and around the world.

The creators of Shadowlands Haunted Places have stated on their site that they have thousands of sites in one:

“State by state, country by country list of haunted places”

The report stated:

“Who among us didn’t grow up hearing about an abandoned house or building on the outskirts of the haunted city? Stories are told of tragic events that took place there, rumors of hearing footsteps or sobs, and even allegations of seeing ghosts. Seems familiar? ‘

Per porch.com, their conclusions are as follows:

  • In the United States, more than 11,000 places are said to be haunted by ghosts
  • 20% of all haunted sites in America are educational institutions, 11% are schools, an additional 9% are colleges and universities
  • Only 1 in 10 sites reported as haunted is a dwelling house
  • Kentucky is the spookiest state with 79 haunted sites per million people
  • Among major cities, the concentration of haunted sites is extremely high in Savannah, Georgia, with 15 haunted sites per 100,000 population
  • Of the small towns, Mackinac Island, MI is by far the most haunted with 3,347 haunted places per 100,000 population
  • Haunted sites are said to be haunted by males and females equally, 14% for both
  • Almost 11% of the possessed are described as a girl, only 8% mention a boy

Check out their report and you’ll find out:

  • States with the highest number of haunted sites in America
  • States with the highest concentration of haunted sites per 100,000 population

Now on to the meat of this room, and it’s Michigan City that has been named America’s most haunted. Interesting because I just spent two nights in this town / island two weekends ago. It would be Mackinac Island. The report stated:

“At the top of the scorching array of haunted cities is Mackinac Island, MI. Its extremely high ratio of 16 haunted sites per 478 inhabitants makes it the most haunted small town in America… ”

I stayed at Haan’s 1830 Inn for two nights but did not hear or see any haunted sites.
